DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach
Tom Schrecengost has solidified his first recruiting class at North Carolina Central University with the signing of both Patricia Muamba and Iris Wilms Floet to National Letter of Intent (NLI) to study at NCCU and play tennis for the Lady Eagles beginning next fall as announced Wednesday, May 4.
Muamba and Floet will join Frida Anneke Cnossen on the women's tennis team as incoming freshmen for 2016-17. Cnossen signed her NLI during the early signing period in November.
"I am extremely excited about the group of young ladies that we are bringing in from a number of standpoints," said Schrecengost. "Number One, I think they are going to add to our depth to go along with the returners that we will have coming back. We will be a deeper team next year. We will be a lot younger. But, I think these ladies are going to add a lot to NCCU. They are good kids; they are intelligent and good in the classroom; they will be invaluable members of the community; and, certainly in time with the adjustment to the college game, they are talented players that will do well for us in competition. I am very enthused with the direction we are headed."
Patricia Muamba is a 5-5 freshman from Laval, Quebec, Canada and Georges-Vanier High School. Patricia will be following the footsteps of her older sister, Aissa, as a student-athlete at NCCU. P. Muamba has been playing club tennis the past three years and was ranked as high as No. 1 as a Canadian junior player at the age of 12 and No. 3 at the age of 14. P. Muamba is interested in pursuing business or accounting at NCCU.
Schrecengost commented, "Patricia plays a different style game than Aissa. She is more of an aggressive power player where you would describe Aissa as more of a grinder type player. Patricia is very suited for the hard courts and the college game. Also, she is very much on the same playing level as Aissa and we all know that Aissa was a wonderful player for NCCU setting the program's all-time career singles wins record. To know you are bringing in a player on the same talent level as of the one you are losing makes you feel a little more comfortable going into next fall. I think Patricia is going to be a great addition in terms of her ability."
Iris Wilms Floet is a 5-6 freshman from Purmerend, The Netherlands. Floet attended Jan van Egmond Lyceum High School and was a two-year team captain. She earned all-state three times and was a champion at a national competition last season. Floet is interested in pursuing accounting at NCCU.
Schrecengost expressed, "Iris is another really good player coming from a great family and we now have two new recruits from The Netherlands. I think Iris will come in and will be battling for a position in our lineup. Again, that adjustment period is something she will have to get use to as in new locale, new environment and all those things. She is a strong player from the backcourt, very solid from the baseline, likes to be aggressive when she has the opportunity and I think the hard courts will suit her game nicely. She should be able to come in and be counted upon to contribute right away."
Frida Anneke Cnossen is also from The Netherlands. Floet and Cnossen did not know each other before being recruited to NCCU but they have corresponded with each other since making the decision to become Lady Eagles. For the release announcing Cnossen,
