DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University volleyball senior Kalin Russell has been named the Nationwide Insurance NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for August 2013 in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments on the court and in the classroom.
A native of Baldwin, N.Y., Russell topped the Eagles with 25 kills in three matches during the month of August. During the NCCU Invitational on Aug. 30-31, she recorded season-highs of 11 kills and seven digs against Evansville, while adding nine kills versus Hampton.
Russell, who boasts a 3.483 grade point average as an athletic training and exercise sport science major, has spent the last two years as a regular on the Dean's List. She is also a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and the Golden Key Honor Society.
In her role as a student athletic trainer, Russell has performed more than 450 hours of service in NCCU, Duke and area high school athletic training rooms.
She was selected as a team captain of the NCCU volleyball team, named Miss Kappa Alpha Psi, and serves on the NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also attended a LeaderShape session, encouraging college students to lead with integrity, in 2011; and an APPLE conference, promoting student-athlete wellness and substance abuse prevention, in 2013.
