Wilkerson (Oxford, N.C.) scored a combined 48 points, breaking open a back-and-forth contest in the second half with a 22-8 run in leading North Carolina Central University to the 77-71 win over Coppin State University on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Md.
In the fifth meeting between these two programs, there were nine ties and 16 lead changes throughout with NCCU using a hot start by shooting 12-for-23 (52.2%) from the field to grab onto a 28-27 halftime lead. It was Wilkerson who paced the Eagles in the first frame after scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The senior guard finished the night with 23 points for NCCU.
The second stanza was Clement’s time to shine as the junior transfer went 5-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-9 from three-point range to roll up 17 points and finish with a season-high 25. His explosion keyed a 22-8 surge that saw NCCU go from trailing 49-45 with 10:42 to go, to up by 10 at 67-57 with 2:37 remaining giving the visiting Eagles just the cushion they needed to run away with the 77-71 win.
NCCU outrebounded Coppin State 36 to 34, and was a stellar 18-for-22 from the charity stripe that included an 11-for-12 effort from Wilkerson, 4-for-4 from Clement, and 2-for-3 from senior point guard Michael Glasker (Newport News, Va.).
Sophomore Dijon Manns scored all of his eight points in the second half to contribute to the Eagle effort as did junior forward Nick Chasten who added seven points in the win.
NCCU (7-8) is now 3-1 against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponents and has won both of its road contests within the league.
Winners of two-in-a-row, the Eagles have the week off before its next contest as they travel up to Norfolk State University for a Saturday night showdown set for approximately 6:00 p.m. from Joseph Echols Hall in Norfolk, Va.
