John Morgan, Jr., rejoined the NCCU coaching staff in 2011 as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach after spending the prior season as the inside linebackers coach at Delaware State and two seasons (2008-09) as head coach at Friendly High School in Fort Washington, Md.
A native of Washington, D.C., and two-time graduate of Bowie State University, Morgan directed NCCU’s 2007 defense to national Division I-FCS rankings of No. 6 in pass defense, No. 10 in pass efficiency defense and No. 18 in total defense.
He spent three seasons (2003-05) as head coach at Fort Valley State University, amassing a 22-11 overall record.
Morgan had two stints at his alma mater, first as defensive and recruiting coordinator (1995-98) and then again for two seasons (2001-02) as associate head coach and defensive and recruiting coordinator during Frazier’s tenure. He has also made coaching stops at Salisbury State (1999), Morgan State (2000) and Maryland (2006).
Morgan completed the requirements for the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Professional Development Series at the 2012 AFCA National Convention.
As a student-athlete at Bowie State, Morgan was an All-CIAA performer his freshman campaign and broke the school record for tackles in a season with 133 takedowns in 1992.

Morgan joined the Delaware State University staff in 2010 after serving as head football coach at Friendly High School in Fort Washington, Md., where in 2008 he led his team to the 1A/2A/3A County Championship.
In 2007, Morgan was defensive coordinator at North Carolina Central University. That season, the Eagles were No. 6 in pass defense, No. 10 in pass efficiency defense and No. 18 in total defense among all Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) schools.
Morgan was a defensive intern at the University of Maryland during the 2006 season, which ended with a victory in the Champs Sports Bowl for the Terps.
From 2003-05, Morgan served as the head football coach at Fort Valley State University, compiling a record of 21-11 in three seasons. While at Fort Valley, Morgan coached the 2004 and 2005 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Players of the Year, the 2004 SIAC Most Valuable Player and 2004 SIAC Freshmen of the Year.
From 2001-03, Morgan served as associate head coach and defensive coordinator at his alma mater, Bowie (Md.) State University. During the 2001 season, Morgan’s defense was No. 6 in total defense (241.0), No. 1 in pass efficiency defense (70%), No. 10 in scoring defense (13.1) and No. 18 in turnover margin among all NCAA Division II teams. In 2002 his unit was No. 2 in total defense (221.4), No. 5 in scoring defense (14.2) and No. 8 in rushing defense (83.8).
Morgan began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Bowie State in 1993. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1995.
During the 1999 season, Morgan served as defensive coordinator at Salisbury State (Md.). His resume’ also includes a year as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at MEAC rival Morgan State (2000).
A 1993 graduate of Bowie State, Morgan holds a bachelor’s in Sociology/Criminal Justice. He earned four letters as a linebacker for the Bulldogs, and helped lead the team to the 1989 CIAA Championship. Morgan also earned a master’s in Counseling from Bowie State in 1995.
A native of Washington, D.C., Morgan is married to the former Tisa Sims. He has three children - Kiara, John and Devin.
