CARY, N.C. – Senior
Hailey Batista hit a go-ahead grand slam in the nightcap to highlight play for the North Carolina Central University softball team in a 2-1 and 7-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader wins over Delaware State University on Saturday.
The Eagles have won six straight league games after completing the series sweep and NCCU improves to 16-31 on the season and 12-6 in conference play. The Hornets depart town at 13-26 and 4-14.
Batista and senior
Jaylah Barr each had three hits on the day and Barr followed Batista's four RBI with three of her own to go along with a team-high two runs scored.
NC Central will next play a non-conference doubleheader at North Carolina State University on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
GAME ONE: NC Central 2, Delaware State 1
All three runs were scored in the first inning in a second straight narrow 2-1 NCCU win over Delaware State, matching Friday's game one final score. Barr and fellow senior
Ivory Jones both supplied RBI doubles for the victorious Eagles.
Uxua Modrego Lopez hit the second pitch of the game over the right-field fence to give the Hornets, but te Eagles quickly had an answer in the home half of the opening frame.
NCCU used a two-out rally in the bottom of the first to score its two runs. Junior
Jai'lyn Edwards singled to start the rally and then scored on Barr's game-tying double to right field. After sophomore
Takia Nichols singled, Jones put the Eagles ahead for good with her double that landed just fair down the left field line to plate Barr.
Those two runs were enough for freshman starter
Xenna Tompkins and junior
Jaden Davis as they combined to keep DSU off the board for the final six innings. Davis (9-15) earned the win after hurling four shutout frames to end the contest with four strikeouts.
NCCU's eight hits were spread out over eight different batters.
GAME TWO: NCCU 7, Delaware State 2
Batista curled her grand slam right down the left field line just fair to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and catapult the Eagles to the sweep. Batista now has a team-high five home runs.
Barr added a two-run single in the sixth as NCCU pulled away to the five-run conquest.
NCCU once again used a two-out rally in the bottom of the first to take the initial edge. This time, the Eagles took advantage of a DSU error to start the rally before freshman
Kendall Smith drove in the opening run with a double that knocked in Graves.
The Hornets leveled the score with their first run in the top of the fourth before Batista blasted her grand slam.
Smith tallied three of NCCU's nine hits. Barr and Batista each added two hits while Davis and freshman
Tyler Suttles each had one hit, one walk and one run.
Junior
Ashanti Eubanks (5-10) tossed a complete-game victory. She limited the Hornets to just six hits over her seven innings of work while supplying four strikeouts.
