NCCU Athletics Academic Support Program
North Carolina Central University has developed the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes to ensure that every student-athlete has the best possible opportunity for academic and personal success. The Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes is a part of the university's Comprehensive Academic Support Center; a center that offers a variety of academic support programs to all NCCU students.
The mission of the Office of Academic Support Programs for Student Athletes at North Carolina Central University is 1) to support the recruitment, retention and graduation of North Carolina Central University student-athletes 2) to provide a comprehensive support system that facilitates the academic, personal, and professional development of all North Carolina Central University student-athletes and 3) to instill a commitment to excellence and life-long learning.
The main objective of the program is to provide appropriate academic support for student-athletes. This support includes study halls, academic mentoring, tutoring, special assistance, secondary advisement, counseling, freshmen orientation and transition, personal development, academic monitoring and record keeping. Being involved in intercollegiate athletics at the university level places special demands on student-athletes; they need to be students as well as athletes. The program has made a commitment to assist student-athletes in meeting those demands. Specific goals of the program include:
1. Enhancing the academic performance of student-athletes through a comprehensive support system consisting of mentoring, tutoring, study halls and academic counseling.
2. Helping student-athletes make normal progress toward graduation.
3. Assisting freshmen student-athletes in making a successful transition to college life.
4. Assisting student-athletes in managing the demands of participation in intercollegiate athletics.
5. Providing student-athletes with the means to assume full responsibility for their education.
6. Helping student-athletes to bridge the gap from college to professional life through the CHAMPS Life Skills Program.
