ATHLETIC TRAININGMission Statement The Athletic Training team at North Carolina Central University has a primary goal to provide the best medical care possible to its student-athletes. The staff, and its medical team, assumes the primary responsibility of health and injury care, injury prevention, and rehabilitation of student-athlete injuries. Our commitment is to provide this quality health care while educating the student-athlete in good health practices and injury maintenance. Also, maintaining continuous education, staying aware of new treatment options, and a constant commitment to improving our Athletic Training program assists us in offering a high standard of care to our student-athletes.
Forms and Documents NCCU Athletic Training requires all new student-athletes, returning student-athletes and walk-ons to complete medical forms and return them to the Athletic Training office before participating in any team-related activity. Facilities - McLendon-McDougald Athletic Training Room The McLendon-McDougald Athletic Training room serves Volleyball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Tennis, and Baseball teams. The Athletic Training room is equipped with whirlpools, modalities, treatment and taping tables, along with a rehab area. - L.T. Walker Complex Athletic Training and Rehab Room The L.T. Walker Complex Athletic Training room serves mainly Football and Men's and Women's Track and Field. The Athletic Training room has a wet area with 3 whirlpools, 4 treatments tables, 4 taping tables, and modalities. In addition to the Athletic Training room there is a rehabilitation room equipped with various rehab equipment for student-athletes.
Athletic Training Staff - Sean Thomas, Head Athletic Trainer Sean Thomas enters his third year as Head Athletic Trainer at North Carolina Central University. Sean is no stranger to the university. He earned a Bachelor's Degree (1995) in Physical Education and a Master's degree (1998) in Physical Education with a specialty in Adaptive Physical Education at North Carolina Central. Prior to coming to North Carolina Central, he was employed as Head Athletic Trainer at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte (2003-2006) where he also taught some classes in Physical Education. In 1999, he joined the Athletic Training staff at Columbia University in New York as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in charge of men's basketball, cross country, and men's and women's outdoor track and as an Associate Professor in Physical Education. Thomas served as a Graduate Assistant at NCCU while completing his Master's Degree, in charge of both basketball programs as well as volleyball. The winner of a Professional Football Athletic Trainers (PFAT) Scholarship, he worked for the Carolina Panthers during the 1996, 1999 and 2000 preseason camps. In the summer of 1997, Thomas was the Head Athletic Trainer for the Durham Braves of the Coastal Plain Baseball League. Thomas is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and licensed by the State of North Carolina. He makes his home in Durham. - Michael Essa, Assistant Athletic Trainer Michael Essa, MA, ATC, LAT, NASM-PES Michael Essa is beginning his fourth year as an assistant athletic trainer at North Carolina Central University, working primarily with the men's basketball, baseball, and tennis teams. He oversees the athletic department's drug testing program, teaches classes in the CATTE accredited undergraduate athletic training program, and serves as an Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI). Essa is a 2003 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a B.A. in Exercise and Sports Science with a specialization in Athletic Training. Following his undergraduate degree, Essa continued his education as a graduate assistant at North Carolina, where he received a M.A. in Exercise and Sport Science in 2005. Essa has been a NATABOC / NCBATE licensed certified athletic trainer since 2003 and holds a NASM - performance enhancement specialist certification. Essa and his lovely wife Kathy have two wonderful dogs, Maverick and Bella. - Nathan Crockett, Assistant Athletic Trainer Nathan Crockett is beginning his second year as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at North Carolina Central University, working primarily with volleyball, women's basketball and spring football. He also serves as an Approved Clinical Instructor for CATTE accredited undergraduate program. Crockett is a 2005 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he received a B.S. in Athletic Training. Following his undergraduate degree, he continued his education as a graduate assistant at West Virginia University, where he received a M.S. in Athletic Training in 2007. Crockett resides in Durham, N.C., with his beautiful wife Christy. - Darkina Ward, Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer Darkina Ward Darkina Ward is beginning her second year as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer, working primarily with football and softball. She is a 2006 graduate of North Carolina Central University, where she received her B.S. in Athletic Training. Before returning to her alma mater, Ward worked as an Intern Athletic Trainer at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., working with volleyball and track and field. She is currently working toward her Master's degree in Athletic Administration.

Boggess, DO, CAQSM Training: * D.O., Midwestern University, Illinois, 2000 Residency: * Family Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, North Carolina, 2003 Fellowship: * C.A.Q.S.M., Primary Care Sports Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, North Carolina, 2004 Clinical Interests: Sports medicine, care of athletes of all ages, non-operative orthopedics, family medicine. - Jason Gauvin, PT Team Physical Therapist Jason Gauvin, PT, MS, LAT, ATC, SCS, CSCS Jason Gauvin, PT, MS, LAT, ATC, SCS, CSCS is the owner and President of Athletic Advantage, Inc. Sports Physical Therapy & Performance Development Center. He was a former senior level II sports physical therapist at Duke University Sports Medicine Physical Therapy in Durham, N.C. Gauvin currently is responsible for day-to-day operations of Athletic Advantage, Inc. specifically daily patient care, including community, high school, collegiate and professional athletes. Gauvin specializes in the treatment of orthopedic and sports injuries to the knee, shoulder and ankle, including the prevention of athletic injuries. Gauvin is active in lecturing nationally on topics related to orthopedic and sports physical therapy and has published a case study, numerous articles, and contributed to several textbooks in the area of sports physical therapy. Gauvin received his Master's of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Springfield College. He completed a sports physical therapy fellowship at Duke University Sports Medicine Physical Therapy in 2000. He is certified as a Sports Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists and has his certification as both an athletic trainer and certified strength and conditioning specialist. He is the former Director of Rehabilitation for the department of Athletics at Stanford University. Gauvin recently completed a two consecutive terms as the chairman of the knee special interest group of the Sports Physical Therapy Section of the APTA.
