McCoy, Williams Repeat Winners for NCCU Women; Jones Claims 800-Meter Run for NCCU Men

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – North Carolina Central University sophomore Ashley McCoy and senior Chavaria Williams each repeated victories in their respective events at the Christopher Newport University Indoor Track & Field Holiday Open on Sunday (Dec. 5) inside the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va., while senior Jamar Jones won the 800-meter run for the Eagles on the men’s side.

For the second consecutive year, McCoy (Wilmington, N.C.) won the CNU Holiday Open women’s sprint event in thrilling fashion, both instances by one-hundredths of a second. On Sunday, she edged Quina Fortune of VCU to capture the 60m dash in 7.54 seconds. A year ago, McCoy squeaked past Dionna Hayes of VCU to win the 55m dash.

Williams (Miramar, Fla.) repeated as the champion in the women’s 400m run with a winning time of 57.39 seconds. Fellow Lady Eagle senior Crystal Shepherd (Fayetteville, N.C.) placed fourth in the 400m run with a time of 59.64 seconds.

Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) raced to victory in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.88, beating out unattached runner Kyle Oates (1:57.02) and Christopher Newport’s Matthew Winkler (1:57.63).

The NCCU men boasted three of the top four triple jumpers at the CNU Holiday Open. Nana Atakora-Bediako placed second with a distance of 46-feet, 2.5-inches (14.08 meters), followed by third place John Minott (13.87m/45’ 6.25”) and fourth place David Shaw (13.86m/45’ 5.75”).

Other NCCU highlights in the men’s field events were turned in by Nealie Whitt with a second-place finish in the shot put (15.07m/49’ 5.5”), Valentino Thomas with a third-place performance in the high jump (2.03m/6’ 8.0”), and Kerrick Williams with a fourth-place effort in the shot put (13.88m/45’ 6.5”).

The other top five individual performer for the NCCU men was Matthew Brown’s fifth-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 22.85 seconds.

The NCCU women also posted a fourth-place effort by Jasmine Wanamaker in the 60m hurdles (8.96) and fifth-place finishes by Dreanna Wallace in the 800m run (2:25.29) and Jessica Blanks in the shot put (11.80m/38’ 8.75”).

In relay action, NCCU placed second in the women’s 4x400m relay, as Williams, Shepherd, Sararesa Hudson and McCoy recorded a time of 3:53.80 to finish ahead of VCU and just behind Hampton. On the men’s side, Matthew Winstead, Jones, Brandon Addison and Charles Lindsey teamed up to place third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:20.96.
