NCCU CENTENNIAL SPORTS HISTORY: DID YOU KNOW?

Aug. 17, 2009

DID YOU KNOW? The tallest player in National Football League history was a North Carolina Central University Eagle. Standing 7-feet tall and weighing 300 pounds, Richard Sligh roamed the NCCU gridiron from 1962-64.

He was drafted in the 10th round of the 1967 NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders.

Sligh was a reserve defensive tackle for the Raiders in Super Bowl II against the Green Bay Packers on Jan. 15, 1968.

As part of North Carolina Central University's Centennial celebration, the NCCU Department of Athletics will post sports history facts from the institution's first 100 years to its official web site, www.NCCUEaglePride.com, every Monday during the year-long observance.
