Alex M. Rivera Athletic Hall of Fame
Introduction
The North Carolina Central University Athletic Hall of Fame is designed to honor former athletes who have acquired prominence in their chosen sports, coaches who have demonstrated outstanding achievement, and individuals who have provided meritorious service to the University in the area of athletics. The ultimate purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honor excellence in those who generate greater visibility for the university, its academics, and the athletic programs.
To this end, the specific purposes of the Hall of Fame are:
To recognize and honor former athletes whose achievements while at NCCU have contributed to the athletic program and have brought accolades to the university.
To recognize and honor coaches whose records as illustrated by individual participants and/or teams attest to their coaching talents and their contribution to the university at large.
To recognize and honor others who through continuous support and interest have had a significant impact on the success of NCCU athletics.
In general, persons eligible for nomination for induction into the Hall
of Fame must have served the university as athletes, coaches, or in a service
capacity to the athletic program. There are four categories for induction:
1) Athletes; 2) Teams; 3) Coaches; and 4) Meritorious Service. Meritorious
Service is designated for those who have given service to NCCU Athletics.
The Hall of Fame Committee
The Hall of Fame Committee and its activities are under the guidance and authority of the Department of Athletics. The Director of Athletics will supervise the Hall of Fame Committee.
The purpose of the Hall of Fame Committee is to oversee the entire induction process in a way that is fair and timely while maintaining its integrity. The Committee will scrutinize nominations to ensure well deserving candidates are considered. The Committee is composed of alumni or friends of NCCU who understand the importance of this position.
The Committee consists of four sub-committees:
1. Nominating Committee
2. Entertainment Committee
3. Golf Tournament Committee
4. Hall of Fame Banquet Committee
Criteria and Procedures for Nomination
Athlete
1. The nominee must have been an NCCU student for a minimum of two years while participating in a sport and must have satisfied requirements for participation in that sport.
2. The nominee must have lettered as a student at NCCU in the sport for which he or she is being nominated.
3. The nominee must have exhibited character and integrity through his/her athletic contribution and been held in high regard by his/her peers.
4. The nominee must have been out of competition at NCCU for at least five (5) years after the graduation of his/her NCCU class.
5. The nominee must not have outstanding and overdue financial obligations to the university or to related organizations.
Coach
1. The nominee must have served as Head Coach at NCCU for at least five years.
2. The nominee must have contributed significantly to the welfare of student athletes and to the progress of the University and the community.
3. The nominee must have been separated from active coaching duties at NCCU for at least five (5) years prior to induction.
Team
1. The team must have won a conference or a national championship (conference and/or tournament).
Meritorious Service
1. The nominee must have made a significant contribution to the development of student athletes, the university, and the community.
2. The nominee must have received recognition for outstanding athletic-related services rendered to the university, the state, and/or the nation.
3. The nominee must be widely recognized for his or her direct or indirect influence on the growth and development of the athletic program at NCCU or at the national or international level.
4. The nominee must be an individual who has made a significant
contribution to the popularity, success, or survival of the athletic program
or an individual sport at NCCU.
Nomination and Selection Process
1. Nominations for the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame may be submitted by an NCCU affiliate (alumnus, supporter) and shall consist of a written nomination accompanied by supporting data and biographies. The nomination must include the current address of any living nominee or the address of a family member if the nominee is deceased.
2. Nominations will be given as received to the Hall of Fame sub-committee and submitted to the full committee for screening.
3. Nominations will commence the first Monday in September of each year and close the last Friday in October. (The Department of Athletics will produce nomination forms that will be available at home football games as well as on the Department of Athletics website [Nomination Form]). Any NCCU employee, Eagle Club member, Trustee Board member, alumnus, inducted Hall of Famer, and any Hall of Fame Committee member will be eligible to submit a nomination.
4. At the nomination closing, the Committee will assemble and reduce the nomination list to a manageable number. The Sports Information Director will be responsible for gathering data in athletic files on candidates that the Committee approves.
5. The Committee shall select by majority vote candidates in each category not to exceed five (5) candidates per category for a given year. The Committee may elect to submit no names in any given category or categories.
6. The identity of the Committee members shall not be publicized, unless public identification shall be required by statute or court order.
7. The Hall of Fame Committee, upon receiving names, may elect to eliminate individuals. In all instances except that of honorary members, a majority vote of the committee shall be sufficient for inductions into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame. All members of the committee including the Chancellor shall exercise their vote.
8. Any name presented by the Hall of Fame Committee for two consecutive years, and not receiving a majority vote (or a unanimous vote in the instance of Honorary Members) on either occasion shall not be resubmitted in that category for at least three consecutive years.
9. Before the publication of names of those to be inducted, the chair of the Hall of Fame Committee shall exercise every effort to ensure that the nominees will participate in the exercises. Nominees unable to participate may be inducted at a later induction. Posthumous nominees should be represented at the exercise by a relative, a friend, or a supporter.
10. The final nomination list will be submitted to the Chancellor for approval in early February. Once the list is approved by the Chancellor, the announcement of that year's class will be made.
11. The Chancellor shall notify those to be inducted by a letter of
congratulations, and the chair of the nominating committee shall inform
inductees of the details of the planned exercise.
